Indonesia Breaks World Record for the Largest Angklung Performance

Jakarta – Indonesia successfully broke record for the largest Angklung musical performance of Guinness World Record that involved 15,110 participants.Â
"I can ensure that with 15,110 Indonesian participants has achieved (record-breaking)," The Guinness World Record official judge, Sonia Usirogochi said at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Saturday.Â
The previously world record for the largest angklung performance was set at the Washington Monument, Washington DC, USA, on July 9, 2011, that involved 5,182 participants.Â
"As known, the previously record was 5,182 participants. In addition, Indonesia as of last month has 124 Guinness World Records. Jakarta has 13 records," Usirogochi added.Â
On the occasion, Usirogochi handed over the world record certificate to Tri Suswati Tito Karnavian, who is the Chairperson of the Organization for Solidarity Action of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet Era (OASE KIM) as well as the head of the performance committee. The certificate was then handed over to First Lady Iriana Jokowi.Â
Meanwhile, the preparation for the performance has been carried out since October 2022 with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
"Angklung is Indonesia's cultural heritage that has been recognized by UNESCO since 2010 and teaches good values of character education that must be preserved and passed on to the next generation," the ministry's Director of Film, Music, and Media, Ahmad Mahendra said on Sunday.Â
Mahendra said his side helped provide 20,060 angklung units and distributed them to 381 angklung groups with 40 members each.
The ministry partnered with the Saung Angklung Udjo (SAU) art center for the performance, where the two planned the musical concept and provided angklung training for all participants.
"In addition to being trained directly by the SAU team, we involved 182 supervisors to accompany the independent training of each group," he remarked.Â
The supervisors were music and art teachers and angklung artists from studios or communities, he added.Â
The participants of the largest angklung performance in the world came from various circles, such as the Organization for Solidarity Action for the Onward Indonesia Cabinet Era (OASE KIM), high schools, and schools of state apparatus.
Representatives of ministries and agencies, wives of state apparatus, and the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) Mobilization Team also took part in the performance.
As information. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin also watched the event.
