Indonesia Commits to Build Chemical and Energy Industry, Jokowi Says

China – In a meeting with several Chinese company leaders on Friday, the Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized Indonesia's commitment to developing the chemical and energy industries.

"Indonesia is committed to developing the chemical and energy industries in Indonesia, particularly in North Kalimantan," the Head of State said at Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu, People's Republic of China (PRC), on Friday. 

The Indonesian government has issued a regulation on national industrial policy which is considered important to support the target of achieving a green economy, President Jokowi added.

"(The regulation) contains development targets as well as the utilization, supply, and distribution of oil, gas, and coal-based chemicals."

Furthermore, President Jokowi said that the business leaders present will play a role in the development of the chemical industry in Indonesia.

"Indonesia targets to become the largest petrochemical producer in Asia," he remarked. 

During the meeting, President Widodo appreciated the investment made by several companies in building industrial estates in a number of regions in Indonesia, including the construction of a petrochemical refinery in Kalimantan.

Also attending the meeting were Minister of Human Development and Culture Affairs; Muhadjir Effendy, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment; Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Retno Marsudi, Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM; Bahlil Lahadalia, and Indonesian Ambassador to China; Djauhari Oratmangun.
