Riots in France Caused More than IDR 108 Trillion Losses

France – The damage caused by the riots triggered by the killing of a 17-year-old teenager by police in France has resulted in a loss of US$715 million or IDR10.8 trillion. This was revealed by an industry agency, on Tuesday.

The government has struggled for weeks to contain the unrest, after a police officer shot dead Nahel M, during a traffic check in a Paris suburb on June 27, 2023. 

The killing revived old accusations of racism in France, after Nahel was identified as a Muslim, "So far, there have been 11,300 insurance claims related to the riots," said Florence Lustman, head of the French Assureurs federation.

Last week, Lustman gave a figure of at least £280 million and emphasized that many claims had yet to be filed. About a third of the damage claimed is property belonging to local government, France Assureurs said.

Earlier this month, the Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire urged insurers to extend claims deadlines. 

The unrest marks the most intense urban violence in France in nearly two decades, with many cars burned, buildings damaged, and public spaces vandalized across the country. 

In addition, last week a United Nations (UN) committee called on France to ensure the investigation into Nahel's murder is thorough and impartial. 

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination also raised concerns over excessive use of force by law enforcement.
