5 Facts of U-17 World Cup: Indonesia Becomes First ASEAN Country

Jakarta – Indonesia is officially becomes the host of the U-17 World Cup 2023. This has been conveyed directly by the Chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir. This international sport event will take place on November 10 to December 2, 2023. 

Here are interesting facts about the U-17 World Cup, reported by various sources: 

Nigeria is the king of the Under-17 World Cup. The country has reached the final eight times and won five times, including in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015. Brazil follows with four trophies.

The appointment of Indonesia as the host country certainly made history, becoming the first ASEAN or Southeast Asian country to organize an Under-17 World Cup event. In addition, Indonesia became the fifth country in ASIA to hold the U-17 World Cup after previously, China, Japan, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and India.

The U-17 World Cup was first held in 1985 and China was appointed as the host when the event first opened. At the event, Nigeria became the champion after defeating West Germany with a score of 2-0.

4. Followed by 24 countries

The U-17 World Cup will be followed by 24 countries, where Indonesia has already qualified as the host. But the king of the U-17 World Cup, Nigeria, did not participate after failing in the qualifying round.

But several countries are predicted to win the title such as Brazil, Argentina France, England, Spain, and Germany are countries that are likely to win the championship.

5. Spain failed to final four times

Spain has stepped into the U-17 World Cup final four times. But they have never tasted the title. Spain reached the final in 1991, 2003, 2007, and 2017.
