President Joko Widodo Celebrates His 62nd Birthday

Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) turns 62 years old on Wednesday, June 21. He revealed that he never celebrated his birthday as a child, as he comes from a village. 

"I never had a birthday. I was a villager, I've never had a birthday since I was born until now," Jokowi said in Gresik on Tuesday. 

Despite today's birthday, he continues to carry out his working visit to various regions, such as East Java to West Nusa Tenggara

Jokowi is the son of Widjiatno Notomihardjo and Sudjiatmi who was born on June 21, 1961 in Surakarta, Central Java. He is the eldest child and the only boy of four siblings.

He has three younger sisters named Iit Sriyantini, Ida Yati, and Titik Relawati. Actually, Jokowi had a younger brother named Joko Lukito, but he died during childbirth.

With the difficulties of life experienced, he was forced to trade, pedaling umbrellas. In fact, Jokowi reportedly had to become a porter to pay for his school fees and daily pocket money. 

When other children went to school by bicycle, he had no choice and had to walk. After graduating from elementary school, he continued his education at JHS Negeri 1 Surakarta. When he graduated from junior high school, he wanted to enter Surakarta State High School 1 but failed so he ended up entering Surakarta State High School 6.

Furthermore, President Jokowi was married Iriana in Surakarta on December 24, 1986. From his marriage with Iriana Jokowi, they have three children, namely Gibran Rakabuming Raka (1987), Kahiyang Ayu (1991), and Kaesang Pangarep (1994). 

In his career in politics, from July 28, 2005, to October 1, 2012, he became the Mayor of Surakarta. After that, he served as Governor of DKI Jakarta from October 15, 2012 to October 16, 2014.

Then, Joko Widodo have a duty as the Indonesian President on October 20, 2014. Elected in the 2014 Presidential Election, He became the first Indonesian President who did not come from among Indonesia's political or military elite. 

He was elected alongside Vice President Jusuf Kalla, and re-elected alongside Vice President Ma'ruf Amin in the 2019 Presidential Election, and will end his term in 2024.
