VIVA – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is preparing a Presidential Regulation on the management of Borobudur Temple Tourism. This was discussed during a meeting on Borobudur tourism management at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, stated that the President is currently providing guidance to prepare a Presidential regulation that will establish a single destination management organization.Â
According to the Minister, this single destination will involve members from various ministries. It is crucial to approach this task with seriousness in order to develop Borobudur Temple tourism while considering cultural aspects, conservation, and ensuring a positive impact on quality and sustainability.
"We hope that as a super-priority destination area, it will be completed by 2024, ideally before September," Minister Uno expected.
The aim, as stated by the Minister, is for the integrated management of Borobudur to contribute to the target of welcoming approximately 8.5 million foreign tourists in 2023 and 14 million foreign tourists in 2024.
"Especially for Borobudur, which has a potential of up to 42 million visitors, it can become a spiritual tourism destination that can accommodate over 20 million foreign tourist visits," he remarked.
Furthermore, the Minister Sandiaga Uno emphasized the importance of developing infrastructure around Borobudur, such as Yogyakarta International Airport, railways, toll roads, and tourist villages.
This, in turn, is expected to create job opportunities, as the Minister stated, "To achieve a labor absorption target of 4.4 million new workers in 2024."
