"The construction of President Soekarno statue is intended as a response to the opening of the statue of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. This monument is erected in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in Mataram Park and was inaugurated on March 11, 2021," a Chairman of the Moscow City Duma, Igor Voskresensky stated as quoted by the @RusEmbJakarta account on Monday.

Yuri Gagarin was the first cosmonaut to successfully venture into space in 1961 aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft. He was born in 1934 and passed away in 1968.

The construction of the statue is in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Russia, as well as the friendship between Jakarta and Moscow.

Voskresensky explained that based on the 1956 archives of the Central Soviet Documentary Film Studio, President Soekarno once visited the Tretyakov Gallery and took a walk along the banks of the Moskva River, precisely at the location that now becomes the Museon Art Park.

"If we draw a historical analogy, Soekarno once visited the location that is now chosen for his statue," Voskresensky remarked.
