Ministry Establishes Emergency Medical Team to Reduce Hajj Deaths

VIVA – The Ministry of Health is preparing an Emergency Medical Team (EMT) to handle medical emergencies during the 2023 Hajj pilgrimage. EMT aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality rates of Indonesian hajj pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
EMT was formerly known as the Rapid Motion Team. This team functions to be closer to the pilgrims and is tasked with carrying out early detection, emergency response to medical emergencies, and carrying out referrals of pilgrims who need treatment at KKHI and RSAS.
"One of the strategies for organizing Hajj health this year is to prepare specialist doctors as EMTs who are placed in each sector so that medical emergencies can be handled more quickly," Head of the Hajj Health Center, Liliek Marhaendro Susilo said at the Ministry of Health on Wednesday.
In the EMT, 15 specialists consisting of anesthesia, internal medicine, surgery, neurology and heart have been prepared. In addition, 12 general practitioners and 43 emergency room/ICU/ER nurses have also been prepared.
The emergency health workers are alerted to provide health services in 5 sectors of the Medina working area and 11 sectors of the Mecca working area adjacent to the pilgrims' lodgings.
This aims to facilitate pilgrims' access to health services, especially emergency conditions that cannot be handled by hajj health workers in the cloter.
EMTs are also alerted at special sector posts, namely at the Prophet's Mosque, Shib Amir Terminal of the Grand Mosque, Arafat, and Mina.
EMTs will continue to accompany the movement of pilgrims, especially at the peak of the pilgrimage or in the Armuzna phase.
"We alert the EMT to always follow the movement of pilgrims during the implementation of worship, especially in the Armuzna phase," Susilo informed.
The EMT also collaborates with the Hajj First Aid Crisis Management Team (PKP3JH), the Hajj Pilgrims Protection Team and the Elderly service recruited by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
With this commitment to synergy, it is hoped that efforts to handle medical emergencies can be carried out more optimally.
