The 2023 SEA Games: Indonesian Athletics Surpasses Gold Medal Target

VIVA – The Indonesian athletics managed to surpass its gold medal target after getting two additional pieces at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, on Wednesday. This addition makes Indonesian athletes collect six gold or surpass the target which is expected to get five gold.

Indonesian Athletics Team Manager, Mustara Musa explained the race for athletics will continue in the next two days. Therefore, he hopes athletes who will compete can add to the coffers of medals for the Indonesia contingent. 

"This success is part of the preparation process, cooperation, and covering each other in big competitions. So, this is an impact of the process. Thankfully, the contingent has got six. Overall, the target is 5 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze," Musa informed.

Indonesia added two gold by Maria Natalia Londa from the women's long jump who recorded the furthest jump of 6.28 meters on the fifth attempt.

Maria Natalia defeated two Vietnamese representatives Thi Thu Thoa Bui in second place with 6.13 meters and Thi Loan Bui who won bronze with 6.02 meters.

Shortly after that, it was the turn of Lalu Muhammad Zohri, Wahyu Setiawan, Bayu Kertanegara, and Sudirman Hadi who won the gold medal in the men's 4x100 meter relay number.

They defeated representatives from Thailand with the composition of Chayut Khongprasit, Kobsit Sittichai, Muhamah Salaeh, and Piayawat Aendu who won silver after posting 39.13 seconds. 

Moreover, the bronze belongs to the Malaysian team consisting of Jonathan Nyepa, Khairul Hafiz Jantan, Mohamad Eizlan Dahalan, and Muhammad Arsyad Md Saat with 39.36 seconds.

Indonesia's gold medals were previously won by Agus Prayogo (men's marathon), Odekta Elvina Naibaho (women's marathon), Hendro Yap (men's 20km fast walk), and Abdul Hafiz (men's javelin throw).

Some Indonesian athletes will still compete. Sapwaturrahman on Thursday will compete in the men's pole vault, Halomoan E. Binsar will compete in the men's 400 meters hurdles, Eki Febri Ekawati will compete in the women's shot put, Agus Prayogo and Riki M. Simbolon will compete in the men's 10,000 meters.

One day later, it was Lalu Muhammad Zohri's turn to compete in the men's 100 meters along with Wahyu Setiawan. Then, there is also Odekta Elvina Naibaho who competes in the women's 10,000.
