969 Indonesians Evacuated from Sudan, President Jokowi Reveals

VIVA – The President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has revealed that 969 of Indonesian citiznes have been successfully evacuated from Sudan. From the total, 963 have been repatriated to Indonesia, while another 33 have been evacuated from Sudan and are now in safe locations.Â
"33 of the 969 Indonesian citizens who have been successfully evacuated from Sudan are currently in a safe place," President Joko Widodo, in a press statement in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Monday.Â
The President also said: "We (the government) will continue to improve and strengthen our protection for Indonesians in the future,"
As information, the conflict in Sudan is getting worse. The United Nations (UN) predicts more than 100,000 people have fled Sudan since fierce fighting broke out between two military factions, on April 15, 2023.Â
UN officials warn of a major catastrophe if the fighting does not end.Â
Fighting continues in the capital, Khartoum, between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), despite a ceasefire about to go into effect. Diplomatic efforts are also being stepped up to try and bring the warring parties to the negotiating table.Â
On May 2, 2023, South Sudan's foreign ministry said the army and RSF had agreed to a seven-day ceasefire, starting from May 4, and promised to send their representatives for talks.Â
The statement came a day after the UN special envoy for Sudan, Volker Perthes, said that both sides had agreed to negotiate a stable and reliable ceasefire.Â
"More than 500 people were killed and more than 4,000 wounded in the fighting," according to Sudan's health ministry.
