VIVA – Several countries in Asia, including Indonesia, are currently being hit by a heat wave that has made the weather feel hotter lately.Â
In extremely hot weather, the skin needs to be protected from sun exposure. That's because overexposure to the sun can cause various health problems such as sunburn, skin cancer, premature aging, and more.Â
To prevent overexposure to the sun, it is important to use protection such as sunscreen and sunblock. Both are skincare products used to protect the skin from sun exposure.Â
However, sunscreen and sunblock are different. So, what is the difference between sunscreen and sunblock? Here to know.Â
Sunscreen:
Sunscreen is a lotion, spray, or gel that contains chemicals that absorb UV rays before they penetrate the skin. These chemicals are called organic or chemical filters, and they work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into heat, which is then dissipated from the skin. Sunscreen usually has a lower SPF (sun protection factor) and must be applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.
Sunblock:
Sunblock, on the other hand, is a lotion or cream that physically blocks the sun's UV rays from reaching the skin. It contains inorganic or physical filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that form a barrier on the skin's surface, reflecting the UV radiation away from the skin.
Sunblock typically has a higher SPF and is recommended for people with sensitive skin or those who spend extended periods in the sun.
The main difference between sunscreen and sunblock is the way they protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen absorbs UV rays, while sunblock physically blocks them. Both types of products are effective, but the best choice for you depends on your skin type and the amount of time you spend in the sun.
It's important to choose a product with a high SPF and to reapply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
