VIVA – The current extremely hot weather in Surat and Ahmedabad, India caused the busy roads or newly-laid roads to ‘melted’ due to the sweltering heat.

The maximum temperature in Ahmedabad touched 41 degrees Celius on Monday and Tuesday, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast similar trends for the rest of the week as well.

The temperature rise caused a freshly laid bitumen to melt on a 200-meter road connecting Chandra Shekhar Azad bridge to Adajan Patiya in Surat. Meanwhile, motorists were seen driving cautiously to avoid getting slipped and pedestrians too complained of their footwear sticking to the road.

In Ahmedabad, the bitumen and asphalt layer had melted spontaneously on the 1.5 km long Sudram Nagar road of the Gomtipur ward of the city a month ago and the same happened on Tuesday.

According to the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials, stone dust was sprinkled to dry the surface after laying liquid bitumen but it still got sticky in the afternoon. After videos and photos of the road started circulating on social media, SMC teams started spraying dust on the road.

Officials also claimed that the liquid bitumen was laid early on Tuesday morning. "The treatment of the road was done ahead of monsoon to ensure that it does not get damaged.

Liquid bitumen prevents water from percolating into the road and it remains in a good condition for a long time," said an officer from SMC's Rander zone.

Talking about if there was negligence on the part of the contractor, the official said that the quality of the material used and the entire process was as per the required standard. After sprinkling another layer of stone dust, the issue will be hopefully resolved, the official continued.

Only a month later, the road-melting incident was repeated on Tuesday due to excessive heat causing inconvenience for commuters and pedestrians.

Iqbal Shaikh, a local corporator, said that there have been several road resurfacing works in the city over the last month, but the Sundram Nagar Road seems to be the only stretch in the city where asphalt has melted.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is yet to address this issue, "this only goes to show the quality of roadwork," he said.
