"We want to cooperate in marine research because Indonesia is a large archipelago. Unfortunately, we still lack marine exploration, marine observation, and utilization of maritime biodiversity," Handoko said during the opening of the 14th Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific, on Tuesday.

Therefore, not only continues the existing cooperation, but we also want to develop other programs in the future, he added.

First, BRIN has rebuilt research facilities and laboratories including conducting several revitalizations. One of them is the research center for the Integrated Laboratory for Oceanographic Research (Laterio) in Ancol.

“It is expected that by the end of 2024, BRIN will have two new research facilities,” Handoko said.

Second, the agency has released a researcher mobility program, "We have eight schemes ranging from research assistantships for university students, postdoctoral and visiting fellowships that are open to anyone. That is, regardless of their nationality. I think this is also open to all of you and researchers in your respective countries," he explained.

Another program BRIN has launched is nine funding schemes including the Hari Layar scheme which allows researchers to conduct marine research using our research facilities.

"In addition, there is also research funding (grants) for clinical trials, which can be used for example, after developing new medicines using marine biodiversity, we can fund the clinical trials," Handoko informed.

BRIN also supports funding for expeditions and explorations, both maritime and terrestrial. Then, it opens up opportunities for neighboring countries and global partners to develop research collaboration centers, in collaboration with local universities that become new platforms in depth.
