How to Prevent Acid Reflux While Fasting

VIVA – As Ramadan is getting closer, Muslims will fast for 30 days. However, while doing this, some people experience acid reflux or GERD. This is caused by for almost a day, our stomachs will be empty. In another word, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing.
In addition to taking medications that can reduce GERD, here are some natural tips to prevent acid reflux during fasting:
1. Avoid spicy and acidic foods: During fasting periods, you should avoid spicy and acidic foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegar. These foods can irritate the stomach lining and increase the production of stomach acid.
2. Avoid caffeine and alcohol: During fasting periods, it’s recommended to avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can irritate the stomach lining and increase the production of stomach acid.
3. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly: Take your time when eating and chew your food thoroughly. This will help to break down the food and make it easier for your stomach to digest.
4. Avoid sleeping after eating: After eating, you should not sleep or lie down for a short period as this can increase the risk of acid reflux. It is best to remain seated or standing for 2-3 hours after eating, giving your body time to fully digest.
5. Reduce stress: Stress can affect the production of stomach acid in the body. Try to reduce stress with meditation, yoga, or other activities that help with relaxation.
6. Consult to the doctor: If you have a serious acid reflux problem, it is best to consult a doctor for proper treatment. Your doctor may recommend medications or lifestyle changes that can help reduce acid reflux.
