Fire in Plumpang Depot: Government to Cover Victims' Medical Costs

VIVA – A massive fire hits the Pertamina depot in the Plumpang area of North Jakarta on Friday. The fire broke out at 8.20 pm local time. It is known that 17 people died, around 50 people suffered burns and thousands of residents were evacuated.

Meanwhile, the Acting of Governor Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, said that all costs for the victims of this pipeline fire will be covered by the government.

"The government will cover the costs. We have also prepared hospitals to treat fire victims. The hospitals consist of Koja Hospital, Pelabuhan Hospital, and Mulya Sari Hospital," Hartono said on Friday at Koja Hospital.

Furthermore, North Jakarta Fire Department Chief Rahmat Kristanto said as many as 17 people were reportedly killed and around 50 others were injured in the fire.

Joint forces are still working to extinguish the fire and evacuate the victims. The Jakarta Gulkarmat Fire and Rescue Department deployed 45 firefighting units and 225 personnel.

From the incident, it is known that many residents were evacuated away from the fire scene. Many of them were rushed to the nearest hospital because they suffered serious burns.

"People who are around the place, please help to facilitate the evacuation and extinguishing process because the road is also minimal, please provide access," said North Jakarta Police Chief, Police grand commission, Gidion.

It is known that as many as 1,085 residents affected by the fire have evacuated to eight emergency disaster posts that have been built. Until now, the joint SAR team is still at the scene of the fire to look for other possible victims among the debris of buildings that have been burned down.

Based on information from the Fire Command Center, a Pertamina gasoline pipeline caught fire. As a result, huge flames and smoke were seen soaring up, making the surrounding sky dark because it was covered in black smoke.
