New Moon Phase, 20 Coastal Areas Potentially Affected by Rob Flood

VIVA – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issues an early warning about the potential for flooding in coastal areas or rob flood in several areas of Indonesia. This is due to the new moon phenomenon which is accompanied by perigee or the closest distance of the moon to the earth.
BMKG Deputy for Meteorology, Guswanto said that around 20 Indonesian coastal areas have the potential to experience tidal flooding starting from January 19 to 29, 2023.
"The potential for coastal flooding or rob flooding on January 19 to 29, 2023, occurs in conjunction with the super new moon phenomenon or the new Moon phase which is accompanied by perigee (the closest distance of the moon to Earth)," said Guswanto in his official statement on Thursday, January 19, 2023.
Furthermore, Guswanto also appealed to all parties and the public, especially crossing transportation users, to increase vigilance as a way to adapt and mitigate these conditions.
Rob flooding is also known as tidal flooding, which is the temporary flooding of low-lying areas near the coast. Areas at risk may experience this flooding several times a year. However, it can also have a significant impact on low-lying coastal areas.
The cause of rob flooding is usually a combination of wind, offshore storms, and the Full Moon cycle during high tides, such as new moons and Full Moons. As a result, people living in coastal areas are expected to always be aware of the arrival of rob floods.
Here are the coastal areas of Indonesia that have the potential to rob floods:
1. Coastal Aceh
2. Coastal North Sumatra
3. Coastal West Sumatra
4. Coastal Lampung
5. Coastal Riau Islands
6. Coastal Bangka Belitung
7. Coastal Banten
8. North Coastal DKI Jakarta
