With nearly one billion Hindus, India has the largest Hindu population in the world. Hinduism stands among the largest world religions, alongside the likes of Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism. Combined, there are over one billion followers of Hinduism in the world today, as quoted from the World Atlas site.

Since thousands of years ago, India is believed to be the origin of Hinduism. The majority of its adherents are Shaivites and Vaishnavism. In 2022, the population of India was 1.41 billion people.

Of this total, 78.9 percent, or 1.09 billion of the population in India adheres to Hinduism which is also the most widely practiced religion. In fact, India is also the country with the largest Hindu population in the world at around 95% of all its people.

Nepal has 28,6 million Hindus. In terms of population percentage, Nepal has the largest Hindu population in the world. In celebration of Hindu culture, Nepal hosts several festivals every year including the great Dashain festival and Yomari punhi. Buddhism also has a strong presence in the country.

The Himalayas in Nepal is, according to Hindu mythology, a place of gods specifically associated with one of the three main Hindu deities, Lord Shiva.

With around 13.8 million people or 8.2 percent of the population embracing Hinduism. Bangladesh is the third largest Hindu country in the world. Hinduism ranks as the second most practiced religion. It is known that the population has experienced a steady decline since 1940, which was a total of 28% of the population at that time.

4. Indonesia

Indonesia has a population that adheres to Hinduism with a percentage of 1.6% of the total population or approximately 4.3 million people. This figure puts Indonesia in the fourth position as the country with the largest Hindu population in the world.

Hinduism itself is centered in Bali. The people practice a fairly different form of Hinduism, which combines local animism and ancestor worship (Pitru Paksha), and respect for Bodhisattvas.

With 1.9% of its population practicing Hinduism, Pakistan ranks fifth on this list. Around 3.99 million people there believe in and practice Hinduism. Like Bangladesh, Hinduism is the second largest religion in Pakistan after Islam, which is practiced by the majority of the population.
