Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak dismissed Kirill’s call as “a cynical trap and an element of propaganda.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had proposed a Russian troop withdrawal earlier, before December 25, but Russia rejected it.

Also, it is said that the Russian move is stretching the time to regroup invasion forces, and prepare for additional attacks.

“Based on the fact that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the areas of hostilities, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire and allow them to attend services on Christmas Eve, as well as on Christmas Day,” President Vladimir Putin said, in a statement released by the Kremlin.

Moreover, in his night speech video, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his forces will reject Putin’s calls to stop the fighting, instead questioning the motives of the Russian Leadership.

“Now they want to use Christmas as a cover temporarily stop the advance of our people in Donbas and bring equipment, ammunition, and mobilize people closer to our positions,” President Zelensky remarked.

What will it give? Just another increase in losses." Zelensky claimed that since he launched the peace plan in November, nearly 110,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, and he accused the Kremlin of planning a pause in fighting "to continue the war with renewed spirit,"
