Meteor Shower in 2023: the Schedule and Best Time to See
- NASA/Bill Ingalls
VIVA – The meteor shower will happen several times in 2023 and can be witnessed by earthlings in several regions. A meteor shower is a large number of falling meteors that look as if they are raining down. This celestial phenomenon occurs when several meteors launch one after another from a certain point.
As the earth circles the sun, it will sometimes hit dusty debris that follows the path of a comet, in this case, a small asteroid. The dust grains will fall into the atmosphere and they move so fast that they scuff the air very quickly and create the small streaks of light that we see today.
Meteor shower sightings usually occur with an intensity of 60 to 200 meteors per hour. Meteors are going to move at an average speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour.
This meteor shower isn’t dangerous for humans. The dust from the comet will burn up at an altitude above 80 km. So, people can see the sky without feeling worried.
How to see the Quadrantid Meteor Shower
At the beginning of this year, the Quadrantid Meteor Shower is the annual opening phenomenon of this celestial body and its peak will take place on January 3-4. The Quadrantid Meteor Shower was first reportedly seen in 1825.
The Quadrantid Meteor Shower originates from the asteroid 2003 EH1. This type of asteroid takes about 5.5 years to orbit around the sun. It will mostly occur in the northern hemisphere. One of the regions that can see the Quadrantid Meteor Shower is India. The meteor shower will be visible at night. To get the best view, you can go to low-light areas or avoid areas with lots of city lights.
Also, look for an open area with a wide view of the sky. The meteor shower can be seen with the direct eye without the help of any tools, but if you want to see it more clearly, you can use telescope rocks.
The human eyes will adjust to the surrounding shadows for about half an hour when seeing the Quadrantid Meteor Shower.
