Getting to know the Coldest Place on Earth
- Wayne/Adobe
VIVA – The coldest place on Earth can make an ill-equipped person suffer from frostbite in just two minutes. That's because this area of the East Antarctic Plateau can reach temperatures as low as 135 degrees Fahrenheit below zero, says the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The American agency further said that the event would take place on a clear winter night. But the new fact, they encountered was that the temperature would be much colder.
Exposure to such extreme temperatures requires preparation and survival equipment to avoid prolonged damage to the body. Exposure to 95 degrees F below zero temperature can make humans suffer from frostbite in just two minutes. So, below 135 degrees F, the coldest place on Earth can make you suffer much faster.
These temperatures are astonishing because they are even much colder than some of the temperatures seen on the Red Planet during winter, and it’s further from the Sun than Earth.
This location has held hard to the moniker of the coldest place on Earth since NASA recorded temperatures there in 2013. Now, almost ten years later, nothing has changed even though global temperatures around the world have risen in that period.
So, it does make you wonder just how long until this area of the planet is affected by the ongoing climate change issues. Or, perhaps we’ll make use of one of the many climate change responses that folks have come up with over the years.
Either way, it really shouldn’t be surprising to learn that the coldest place on Earth is somewhere in the middle of the Antarctic. In fact, the coldest place on our planet should be perhaps one of the furthest from civilization, too.
