VIVA – The world has entered 2023, and it is now the first month of the year, January. January symbolizes a good start to the new year. This is because January is the first month of the 12 months of each year.

January also has many special features and a long history until it was finally included in the calendar in Roman times. Well, here are some fun facts from January, as reported by various sources.

1. Origin naming of January

The name January comes from the Roman god, Janus, who was always depicted as two-headed. He uses one head to look back at the previous year, and the other head to look forward to the New Year.

Originally, the Roman calendar only had 10 months and did not include January and February. King Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, was responsible for adding January and February to the Roman calendar.

He did this to make the calendar equivalent to the lunar year. Even so, it only had 30 days. Eventually, Julius Caesar added the 31st day to the month and made it the full month of January that we practice today.

In the United Kingdom, some people practice “Dry January.” This is a movement to encourage people to quit drinking alcohol for the month to encourage public health.



Some historical names for January include "Wulfmonath," which is of Anglo-Saxon origin because it was the month when wolves were hungry and would come scavenging. King Charlemagne called it "Wintermanoth" which means "winter or cold month".

January is a monumental year for Alaska. On January 3, 1959, Alaska officially became the 49^th state in the United States. Referring back to the Julian and Gregorian calendars, January is the first month of the year, and the first of seven months to be 31 days.

January has two zodiac signs - Capricorn, which is valid until January 19, and Aquarius, which is valid for the rest of the month and Dianthus caryophullus the January-born flower better known as the carnation.



Often nicknamed “divorce month” by lawyers, this is the most common month for couples to divorce or break up. It’s unknown if this uptick in uncouplings is related to the fresh starts January is so famous for, or if it’s the proximity to the pressure cooker that is the Christmas holidays.

Either way, it is safe to assume that a divorce lawyer’s favorite month is also January.
