The hospital Albert Einstein also said the cause was multiple organ failure, the result of the progression of colon cancer. Pelé had been receiving treatment for cancer in recent years, and he entered the hospital several weeks ago for treatment of a variety of health issues, including a respiratory infection.

This was also conveyed through Pelé or in full Edson Arantes do Nascimento's personal Instagram, which is managed by his agency.

“On his journey, Edson enchanted the world with his genius in sport, stopped a war, carried out social works all over the world, and spread what he most believed to cure for all our problems: love.” Continued the caption.

He won three World Cup tournaments with Brazil and 10 league titles with Santos, his club team, as well as the 1977 North American Soccer League championship with the New York Cosmos. Having come out of retirement at 34, he spent three seasons with the Cosmos on a crusade to popularize soccer in the United States.

With Santos, Pelé led the club to collect 25 trophies including six Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A titles, two Copa Libertadores trophies, and two Intercontinental Cup trophies.

Pele expertise was also evident at the international level with three gold medals when he led Brazil to win the World Cup three times in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

In December 2000, Pelé and Argentine legend Diego Maradona were both awarded the title of Best Player of the 20th Century.
