VIVA – The year 2022 is coming to an end and is ready to be replaced by 2023. This year, Indonesian sports managed to record sweet gains. This achievement was recorded by the Indonesian contingent at the 2021 SEA Games which was postponed in 2022 due to COVID-19.

In this SEA Games, there are new sports competed, namely xiangqi, a favorite sport in Vietnam, and E-Sports.

At the 2022 SEA Games, Indonesia sent a total of 476 athletes. However, not all sports are contested by Indonesian athletes. Only 31 were followed by representatives of the country from 50 sports competed.

However, the government gave a high target to the Indonesian contingent by finishing in the top four in the 2022 SEA Games final standings and winning 79 gold medals.

The government through the Minister of Sports is based on the results of the previous SEA Games held in the Philippines in 2019. At that time, Indonesia finished in fourth place with 72 gold, 84 silver, and 111 bronze.

As a result, Indonesia finished third in the standings with 69 gold, 91 silver, and 81 bronze, and the results were in line with government expectations. However, the Red and White team's medal achievement was far below the host who ruled with 205 gold, 125 silver, and 116 bronze.

While the second position is occupied by Thailand with 92 gold, 103 silver, and 136 bronze.

Likewise with men's basketball. The Indonesian national team successfully won gold after defeating the defending champion Philippines 85-81 in the last match.

Since the SEA Games first rolled out in 1977, this is Indonesia's first gold medal in men's basketball. The record became more special because Arki Dikania Wisnu and team managed to stop the dominance of the Philippines, which subscribed to the SEA Games gold medal for 31 years.

The Philippines is a regular SEA Games men's basketball champion, winning 18 gold medals from 21 SEA Games basketball editions.

Indonesia became the third country, after the Philippines and Malaysia, to win the SEA Games men's basketball gold medal.
