Health Ministry Evaluates the Living Cost for Intern Doctors

VIVA – Some time ago, there was viral news about the intern doctors’ salary as of 2023 which was considered too low. After receiving input from various parties, the Ministry of Health made adjustments to the amount of Living Cost Assistance (BBH) for internship doctors in Indonesia.

The Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that as a follow-up, adjustments to the Minister of Health Decree (KMK) will be made regarding the amount of BBH that will be received by interns which will take effect starting in 2023, according to an online press statement, Thursday, December 15, 2022.

“I thank you very much for the various inputs we received regarding Living Expense Assistance (BBH) for intern doctors and dentists. It is our duty in the government to absorb input and aspirations from the public, including doctors and dentists as community service providers,” said Budi on Thursday, December 15, 2022.

He emphasized that reforming the health system through health transformation will not occur if it is not supported by an equal distribution of human resources.

“Therefore, through the internship program it is hoped that it can improve health services so that people in areas that have had difficulty obtaining health services can access doctors, dentists, and health services,” he continued.

In practice, interns receive BBH while implementing the doctor and dentist internship program. Minister Budi said that the evaluation of the amount of BBH is adjusted based on six regional categories as follows:

First, Remote, Border, and Islands Regions (DTPK) with a nominal value of IDR6,499,575.

Second, Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua (outside DTPK) with a nominal value of IDR3,999,574.

Third, Kalimantan and Sulawesi (outside DTPK) with a nominal value of IDR3,727,034.

Fourth, Sumatra and West Nusa Tenggara (outside the provincial capital and DTPK) with a nominal value of IDR3,498,800.

Fifth, provincial capitals in Sumatra and West Nusa Tenggara with a nominal value of IDR3,241,200.

Sixth, Java and Bali with a nominal value of IDR3,241,200.

"BBH in DTPK areas is given higher, with the hope of encouraging prospective interns to choose a vehicle in the remote, border, and island areas," Minister Budi remarked.
