VIVA – Google Doodle features the face of Robin Hood in Indonesia. Donald Djanatus Pandiangan. Today, Google celebrates his birthday. He was born in Sidikalang, North Sumatra on December 12, 1945.
Donald Djatunas Pandiangan was an Indonesian archer who coached the archery team that won its first Olympic medal in 1998. He won more than twenty gold medals in archery at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).
He’s the tenth of eleven children. As a child, he aspired to be an engineer. However, because of finances prevented him from finishing college. Then, Donald Pandiangan worked in a transportation company. Because of his good performance, Donald was rewarded with an archery set that changed his life.
He took up archery when he was 25 years old. Donald fell in love with archery and practiced diligently. Three years later, he won his first gold medal at the VII National Sports Week in 1973 in Surabaya.
Four years later, Donald Pandiangan broke the world record in Recurve 70m at PON IX 1977 in Jakarta. In 1977 and 1987 he won multiple gold medals at the SEA Games.
In 1980, Donald almost competed in the Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union, but was unable to attend due to Indonesia's boycott of the event.
A few years later, Donald began coaching the women's archery team for the 1988 Summer Olympic championships in Seoul, South Korea. Lilies Handayani, Nurfitriyana Saiman, and Kusuma Wardhani won the first silver medal in Indonesia's history. So, Happy birthday Donald Djatunas Pandiangan!
