Indonesian Toy Industry Exports Increase Almost 30% This Year

VIVA – The Ministry of Industry is trying to maintain the development of toy industry ecosystem. So, it makes the exports still continues. The Industry Ministry also noted that the export value of the Indonesian toy industry reached US$383 million or increased by 29.83% during January-September 2022.

"Until now, the main export destinations for Indonesian toys include the United States, Singapore, the United Kingdom, China, and Germany," said Director General of Small, Medium and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA), Reni Yanita in her remarks representing the Minister of Industry at the Expansion of Production Lines and Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of PT Mattel Indonesia in Cikarang, West Java, Thursday, December 8, 2022.

Reni Yanita said the most exported types of toy products include dolls, stuffed toys, and reduced-model toys. Until today, several large and medium-scale toy industries in Indonesia have reached 131 companies, with a total workforce of 36 thousand people. Most of these industries are located in West Java, DKI Jakarta, and East Java.

"One of the major well-known toy manufacturers that have invested in Indonesia and contributed to absorbing up to 9,000 workers during the peak season is PT Mattel Indonesia," Reni Yanita said.

The US-based company has two factories in the country, the east plant, which produces Barbie dolls, and the west plant, which produces die-cast cars under the Hot Wheels brand. They also involve small and medium industries (SMEs) in the production process.

The company, which has been operating in Indonesia since 1992, has a production capacity of 85 million fashion dolls and 120 million toy cars per year. Mattel successfully exports children's toys made in Indonesia to Japan, Hong Kong, China, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Brasilia, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy.

"The Ministry of Industry appreciates PT Mattel Indonesia for contributing more than 35 percent of the total export value of toys from Indonesia to the world. This is in line with the Ministry of Industry's strategic steps which are spurring the development of labor-intensive and export-oriented domestic industries," Reni Yanita said.

Furthermore, PT Mattel plans to increase its investment by expanding the fashion doll factory. "With the expansion, PT Mattel Indonesia is projected to create around 2,500 new jobs for Indonesian workers," added Reni Yanita.

On the same occasion, Vice President and General Manager of Mattel in Indonesia, Roy Tandean, said that the expansion of manufacturing operations will strengthen Mattel's long-term presence in Indonesia.

This expansion also strengthens Indonesia's role as a leading manufacturer in the global toy industry," Roy Tandean said.
