List of Indonesian Startups Conduct Mass Layoffs Throughout 2022

VIVA – The wave of layoffs continues amid the news of a potential global recession that has not yet subsided. In 2022, several startups are taking steps to reduce staff with layoffs. Recently, startup, Ajaib laid off dozens of employees, following GoTo and Ruangguru. This news affects 67 employees or 8 percent of total employees.

GoTo

The subsidiary of the Gojek and Tokopedia company, the GoTo Group on November 18, conducted mass layoff 12 percent of its permanent employees or 1,300 workers. These steps were taken to encourage the acceleration of financial independence. 

"However, to further navigate amid increasingly challenging global economic conditions, GoTo must focus on matters within the company's control including downsizing employees," the company said.

Ruangguru

On the same day as GoTo's announcement, Ruangguru also did the same to hundreds of its employees. Ruangguru's CEO, Belva Devara, admitted that he failed to predict and anticipate the rapidly evolving economic situation. 

This decision was made due to the drastically deteriorating global market situation. All those affected have received severance pay, long service pay, and replacement rights as well as extended insurance. 

Zenius

In May and August, Zenius made layoffs because of the macroeconomic conditions. They need to realign and reprioritize the organization to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.

Going forward the startup will focus more on providing a hybrid learning experience through the New Primagama network to complement the online business where out-of-school tutoring still has a lot of room to grow.

Indonesian startup, Lummo or formerly known as BukuKas, a software solution provider that connects businesses with customers has laid off hundreds of employees in Jakarta and Bengaluru, India. The startup laid off around 100 to 120 employees in Jakarta and 50-60 employees from its branch office in Bengaluru. As people know, Lummo's investor is Amazon Founder, Jeff Bezos.
