Fun Traditions and Myths in Indonesia during the Lunar Eclipse

VIVA – In the total lunar eclipse phenomenon that occurred last night on November 8, 2022, some fun traditions and myths are still believed by some Indonesians. Some people still believe in ancient Javanese myths about lunar eclipses with various magical meanings.

In the ancient Javanese myth, it is believed that when a lunar eclipse occurs, a giant is swallowing the moon. Therefore, people make noises so the giant discourages his intention to eat the moon, as reported by AntvKlik.

Here are some traditions and facts in Indonesia when a lunar eclipse occurs.

1. Beating Mortar during the Lunar Eclipse

The unique tradition of beating mortar or Indonesian known as Lesung is done to make noises to repel the giants who take the moon, as reported from various sources. Usually, some Indonesian people who believe this will gather in a spacious courtyard. Meanwhile, other people will sit around the Lesung to watch. 

Lesung that is beaten has a special rhythm and tone that was also inherited by their ancestors. According to their beliefs, beating mortar during a lunar eclipse is an activity accompanied by prayers to bring blessings and keep away from disasters.

Similar to beating a mortar, beating a drum is also done to ward off giants who want to swallow the moon. Although in this day and age this tradition has begun to diminish, it is still preserved by some people, especially Javanese people.

3. Hanging in the Pole

There is also a tradition of hanging on a pole which is usually climbed by children scrambling to hang together. They do this when the tone of the mortar begins to sound different. The tradition of children hanging on this pole is believed to elevate their bodies.

4. Myths of Pregnant Woman during the Lunar Eclipse

Usually, pregnant woman is forbidden to go out and are required to be in bed so that the unborn baby does not experience defects. In addition, pregnant women must also stay awake and should not sleep to avoid miscarriage.

After the lunar eclipse is over, the pregnant woman's stomach will be smeared with warm ash from the kitchen fireplace while telling the baby in Java language “Ojo Kaget yo Jabang Bayi” which means the baby is not to be surprised.
