VIVA – The 2022 World Cup will be held soon in Qatar. A total of 32 countries will compete to be the best this year. This world match will take place between November 20 and December 18. So far, the World Cup has been held 21 times. So, here’s an explanation of the World Cup from time to time-based on historical records.

-The First World Cup-

As quoted from various sources, the FIFA World Cup was first held in 1930, when FIFA president Jules Rimet decided to organize an international football tournament.

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930 and won by the hosts. At that time, it was contested as a tournament final consisting of only 13 teams invited by the organization.  

Since then, the World Cup has undergone successive expansions and a recreated format for the current 32-team final tournament preceded by a two-year qualifying process, involving nearly 200 teams from around the world.

-The Second World Cup-

The 1934 World Cup was the second to be held in Italy. It ran from May 27 to June 10.

Italy was selected as the host by FIFA in October 1932. Italy became the champion after defeating Czechoslovakia in the final with a score of 2-1.

-The Third World Cup-

The 1938 World Cup was the third edition. It was held in France from June 4 to June 19, 1938.  Italy defended its title in the final, beating Hungary 4-2.

-The Fourth World Cup-

The 1950 World Cup was the fourth edition to be held in Brazil. It was held from June 24 to July 19. This was the first World Cup after World War II, which lasted for about 12 years.

-The Fifth World Cup-

The 1954 World Cup was the fifth edition. It was held in Switzerland from June 16 to July 4. Switzerland was selected as the host country in July 1946.

-The Sixth World Cup-

The 1958 World Cup was the sixth edition. It was held in Sweden from June 8 to 29, 1958. It was the first World Cup to be played in a Nordic country. 

-The Seventh World Cup-

The 1962 World Cup was the seventh edition. It was held from May 30 to June 17, 1962, in Chile.  

-The Eighth World Cup-

The 1966 World Cup was the eighth edition. The tournament was held in England from July 11 to 30, 1990. It is known, 16 teams participated in the finals. Matches were held at 8 stadiums in England.

-The Ninth World Cup-

The 1970 World Cup was the ninth edition. It was held in Mexico, from May 31 to June 21, 1970. Mexico was selected by FIFA in October 1964 at a meeting in Tokyo, Japan. This was the first edition of the World Cup held in a North American country, taking the tournament outside of South America and Europe

The tournament was won by Brazil, after winning the final match over Italy with a score of 4-1, making Brazil the first team to win the World Cup for the third time and the right to have the Jules Rimet Cup forever.

-The Tenth World Cup-

The 1974 World Cup was held in West Germany. The Jules Rimet Trophy, which belonged to Brazil forever, was replaced by a trophy by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga. The trophy in the shape of two men carrying a globe was made of 18-carat gold alloy weighing 11 pounds and 20 inches high. 

This time the tournament was divided into two stages. The sixteen qualified countries are divided into four groups of four teams each.

-The Eleventh World Cup-

The 1978 World Cup, was the 11th edition. It was held in Argentina between June 1 and June 25. Argentina was selected to host by FIFA in July 1966. The 1978 FIFA World Cup was won by Argentina who defeated the Netherlands 3-1 after extra time in the final. 

This was the first title for Argentina which became the sixth team (after Uruguay, Italy, West Germany, Brazil, and England) to become champions.

-The Twelfth World Cup-

The 1982 World Cup was the 12th edition. The tournament was held in Spain from June 13 to July 11, 1982.  24 teams participated in the finals, which was an increase in participants from the previous editions of 16 teams.

Italy won the tournament after a 3-1 victory over West Germany in the final match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, in Madrid. Poland finished third after beating France 3-2 in the third-place match at the José Rico Pérez Stadium in Alicante.

Italy's Paolo Rossi was the best player of the tournament as well as the top scorer of the finals with six goals.

-The Thirteenth World Cup-

The 1986 World Cup was the 13th edition. It was held in Mexico, from May 31 to June 29, 1986. Mexico was selected to host this edition, replacing Colombia which withdrew, after a vote of the FIFA Executive Committee in Zürich, Switzerland on May 20, 1983, beating the United States and Canada.

Then, the tournament was won by Argentina over West Germany after winning the final match at Azteca, Mexico City with a score of 3-2. France took third place over Belgium, winning 4-2 after extra time in the third-place match at the Cuauhtemoc Stadium in Puebla.

-The Fourteenth World Cup-

The 1990 or 14th edition of the World Cup was held in Italy. The spirit of the host-style defensive game known as catenaccio seemed to affect the appearance of almost all 24 finalist teams. Before it started, Italy in 1990 was predicted to be a big tournament. Six champions, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, West Germany, Uruguay, and England, took part.

The official song of the 1990 World Cup was To Be Number One, performed by Italian singers Edoardo Bennato and Gianna Nannini.

-The Fifteenth World Cup-

The 1994 World Cup was the 15th edition. It was held in the United States, from June 17 to July 17, 1994. The United States was selected by FIFA in July 1988 at a session in Zürich, Switzerland.  The tournament was won by Brazil, after winning the final match over Italy on penalties by a score of 3-2, after a goalless draw for the first 120 minutes.

This was the first time the use of penalty shootouts in determining the FIFA World Cup champion.  Sweden finished third after a 4-0 win over Bulgaria. Both the final and the third-place match were held at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Los Angeles.

-The Sixteenth World Cup-

The 1998 World Cup was the 16th edition. It was held in France, from June 10 to July 12, 1998. France was chosen by FIFA in July 1992 in an election in Zürich, Switzerland, beating two other candidates, Morocco and Switzerland. 

The tournament was won by hosts France, after winning the final match at the Stade de France, Saint-Denis over Brazil by a score of 0-3.  Meanwhile, dark horse Croatia finished third after a 1-2 win over the Netherlands in the third-place match at the Parc des Princes Stadium in Paris.

-The Seventeenth World Cup-

The 2002 World Cup was the 17th edition. The tournament was held for the first time in two countries, South Korea and Japan from May 31 to June 30, 2002. 

32 teams participated in the finals. Brazil won the tournament for the fifth time after a 2-0 victory over Germany in the final match at the Yokohama International Stadium in Yokohama, Japan. Turkey finished third after defeating hosts South Korea 3-2 in the third-place match at the Daegu World Cup Stadium in Daegu.

-The Eighteenth World Cup-

The 2006 World Cup was the 18th edition. The final round was held in Germany, from June 9 to July 9, 2006.  The tournament was won by Italy, after winning the final match over France on penalties by a score of 5-3, following a 1-1 draw for the first 120 minutes in the final match at the Olympic Stadium, Berlin. 

This was the second time the use of penalty shootouts in determining the FIFA World Cup champion. Meanwhile, hosts Germany won the third place after winning with a score of 3-1 over Portugal in the third-place match at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium, Stuttgart.

-The Nineteenth World Cup-

The 2010 World Cup was the 19th edition, held in South Africa. This year's World Cup was the first to be held in an African country.

South Africa was selected as the organizer in May 2004, beating Morocco and Egypt in a draw process open only to African countries. The World Cup is held every four years; the previous tournament was held in Germany, while the next tournament will be held in Brazil.

-The Twentieth World Cup-

The 2014 World Cup was the 20th edition, held in Brazil. It was the second time Brazil hosted the tournament (after 1950), Brazil became the fifth country to have hosted the FIFA World Cup more than once, after Mexico, Italy, France, and Germany. 

It was also the first FIFA World Cup to be held in South America since Argentina in 1978. No South American country had previously hosted the FIFA World Cup more than once. For the first time in the World Cup finals, matches were played using goal-line technology.

Germany became the champion after defeating Argentina in the final match with a score of 1-0. While the Netherlands became the third champion after defeating the home team Brazil in the third-place match with a score of 3-0.

-The Twenty-First World Cup-

The 2018 World Cup was the 21st edition. The tournament was held in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018, after the country was selected as host on December 2, 2010. This edition of the World Cup was the first to be held in Europe since the 2006 edition in Germany. 

All stadiums except the Central Stadium are located in European Russia, west of the Ural Mountains, to reduce travel time due to the country's size. This was the first World Cup to be held in Eastern Europe and the eleventh time in Europe. For the first time, the tournament took place on two continents - Europe and Asia.

All the stadiums, except one, were located in European Russia. With an estimated cost of over $14.2 billion, it was the most expensive World Cup ever. It was also the first World Cup to use video assistant referees (VAR).
