VIVA – Morotai Island is one of the main tourist destinations that must visit in the eastern part of Indonesia. Morotai Island is the name of an island in the Halmahera Islands, Maluku Islands.

This island has a variety of tourism that people should not miss. To reach this island, people can take three routes, namely air, sea, and land.

For people who use the air route, people can take a plane to Ternate, then take Susi Air to Morotai Island. Meanwhile, by sea, people can take it from Ahmad Yani Harbor or Imam Lastori. Finally, the land route can be reached by the Ternate-Sofifi-Tobelo-Morotai route.

In the period from the 15th to the 16th century, this area was under the rule of the Sultanate of Ternate and became the main location of a large area called Moro which also included the island and coast of Halmahera which was not far from Morotai to the south.

Then, the arrival of the Portuguese who brought the Jesuit mission began to appear in the Morotai area. This is certainly addressed quite hard by the Sultanate of Ternate which is based on Islamic teachings.

Short story, in 1571 the Portuguese then left the Morotai region. However, the influence of Jesuit teachings has since spread. In the era of the 17th century, the Sultanate used its power to order residents to move from the island of Morotai. Sultan Hamzah from Ternate ordered the migration of the Christian population to Malay to make it easier to control.

The history of the island of Morotai then becomes even more interesting when this place became an airfield for Japan during the World War II era.

Over time, the United States took control of the island in 1944, then became an Allied airstrip to attack the Philippines in early 1945.


