Previously, NATO fighter jets (Germany, Denmark, Sweden) were deployed to follow and intercept the aircraft on an erratic flight that began in southern Spain. The mysterious plane had crossed several countries in Europe without permission.

The officials said the plane reportedly had four people on board and was about to land in Cologne, Germany, but instead continued its flight to the Baltic. NATO pilots and Swedish officials tracking the plane saw no one in the mysterious plane's cockpit.

In the afternoon, it was observed on FlightRadar24 that the plane had lost speed and altitude.

German newspaper Bild said the plane reported a cabin pressure problem after takeoff and lost contact after passing over the Iberian Peninsula.

German media said the passengers were a family of a man, a woman, and their daughter in addition to the pilot.

Rescue teams from Latvia, Sweden, and Lithuania arrived at the crash site, soon after reports that the plane had crashed into the sea near the Latvian city of Ventspils at 8 p.m. local time.

Latvian and Swedish rescue boats and coast guards patrolling near the crash site were alerted to assist with the effort. Debris from the plane and an oil spill have been found at the site, Swedish media reports said.

"The plane crashed when it ran out of fuel," Swedish search and rescue operations leader, Lars Antonsson remarked.

Then, he told AFP that no remains had been found. According to Antonsson, the rescue team could not give any explanation regarding what happened, they could only speculate.
