It is because Venice's canals are home to decaying algae, sewage systems, and salty brine which all combine to create a foul odor. During the summer, the smell will get worse.

Seal Island is located in False Bay off the southern coast of South Africa and is home to the Cape Fur seal. These seals used to chat, fight and defecate around the barren rocks of the island. So, the place got very smelly.
