The Legend Myth of Watu Peti Beach on Kangge Island

VIVA – Kangge Island in the Alor Islands, East Nusa Tenggara has several beautiful tourist attractions. One of them, Watu Peti beach. According to the circulated story, there is a legend myth about the name of this Watu Peti.

Head of Marisa Village, Kangge Island, Suaib Tupong said the name Watu Peti comes from two words. "Watu" means stone and "Peti" means a chest. So, watu peti means a stone that resembles a chest.

Watu Peti is located on the beach and slightly protrudes into the ocean. The size of this stone is not too big and dark in color like rocks.

Not far from Watu Peti, there is a stone resembling a chicken, it was said to belong to a princess named Siti Sangedah.

“It was said that in our local people story, Watu Peti was once a treasure chest belonging to a princess named Siti Sangedah, who ran away from her kingdom in Munaseli. One package with a chicken stone, which was also the princess's pet chicken," Suaib Tupong remarked on Friday, August 26, 2022.

Suaib Tupong continued, Siti Sangedah was forcibly picked up by her parents' messenger and left the chicken and the treasure chest near the beach.

When it will be picked up again, the chest has turned to stone. Likewise, Siti Sangedah's Sidikoko chicken has turned stone like a chicken.

"It was said that Siti Sangedah's Sidikoko chicken every time it crows there must be an incident that seems to want to be notified," Suaib Tupong added.

Watu Peti on Kangge Island not only offers exotic beaches and very beautiful white sand. Tourists can swim because the waves are not dangerous.

Not only that, but Watu Peti tourism also offers trekking places for tourists on the hill near the beach. To reach the top of the hill, tourists need around 30 minutes of travel.

Tourists must be careful when crossing the road to the top of this hill because it is a little slippery and the rocks are uphill. However, tourists will not feel the trip was in vain because the view of the hill is amazing.

Tourists who want to visit Watu Peti, they can visit Marisa Village first. Then, use the services of a fishing boat by paying Rp60,000 to Rp70,000 for each person. It only takes 20 minutes from Marisa Village to this Watu Peti tourism.
