The Tallest and Historic Statues of Indonesian Heroes

VIVA – Indonesia was able to achieve independence after a long period of colonialism because of the struggle of Indonesian and also the heroes. The heroes have fought life and death to defend Indonesia.

For their outstanding service and struggle in helping Indonesia to become independent, the Indonesian government decided to make a statue as a form of respect and love for Indonesian heroes. It has a purpose for future generations to be able to recognize the history of heroes in Indonesia.

1. WR Supratman Statue

WR Supratman or Wage Rudolf Supratman was born on March 19, 1903, and died on August 17, 1938. He’s known as a teacher, journalist, violinist, and composer during the Dutch East Indies era.

WR Supratman is known as the composer of the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya. For his services and struggles, the Indonesian government made a statue of WR Supratman with a height of two meters.

The statue shows the Surabaya-born hero holding a musical instrument, namely the violin. The statue is located in the tomb of WR Supratman on Kenjeran street, East Surabaya.

2. Seven Statues of Heroes of the Revolution

The seven Revolutionary Heroes Statues are 2.5 meters each and stand on a 1.5-meter-high relief. It describes the events of September 30. While on the back wall as high as 17 meters depicts the date of Indonesian independence. On the wall, there is also a statue of an eagle that symbolizes Indonesia.

The seven Revolutionary Heroes Statues are located on Pondok Gede street, Crocodile Hole, Kec. Cipayung, East Jakarta City, Special Capital Region of Jakarta. In addition, the seven Statues of Heroes of the Revolution are named respectively, as follows:

- Commander of the Army Lt. Gen. Ahmad Yani,

- Major General TNI R. Suprapto

 - Major General TNI M.T. Haryono

- Major General TNI Siswondo Parman

- Brigadier General TNI DI Panjaitan

- Brigadier General Sutoyo Siswomiharjo TNI

- TNI officer First Lieutenant Pierre Tendean Adjutant General TNI A.H. Nasution.

3. Statue of Martha Christina Tiahahu

Martha Christina Tiahahu is a girl from the village of Abubu on the island of Nusa Laut. She started taking up arms at the age of 17 because she wanted to fight the Dutch.

Her father was Kapitan Paulus Tiahahu, a captain from the country of Abubu who also helped Thomas Matulessy in the Pattimura War in 1817 against the Dutch.

Martha Christina Tiahahu is recorded as a brave freedom fighter because when she participated on the battlefield against the Dutch colonial army during the Pattimura War in 1817, she was still a teenager at that time.

Courage and consequences are well known among warriors, the public at large, and even enemies. For her courage, the Indonesian government made a 6-meter-high statue located in Rumah Tiga, Kec. Tlk. Ambon, Ambon City, Maluku.

4. Statue of Pangeran Diponegoro

Pangeran Diponegoro or Bendara Prince Harya Dipanegara is one of the national heroes of the Republic of Indonesia, who led the Diponegoro War or the Java War during the period from 1825 to 1830 against the Dutch East Indies government.

History records, the Diponegoro War or the Java War is known as the war that claimed the most victims in Indonesian history, namely 8,000 Dutch East Indies soldiers, 7,000 natives, and 200 thousand Javanese as well as material losses of 25 million guilders.

For his extraordinary struggle, the Indonesian government made a 9-meter-high statue of Prince Diponegoro. In addition, the Hero Diponegoro statue is made of 8 tons of bronze.

5. Statue of the Proclamation Monument

The Proclamation Monument is a memorial to the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia which stands in the Proclamation Park complex on Proklamasi street, Central Jakarta. The park is located in Soekarno's former residence on Pegangsaan Timur 56, now known as Proklamasi street.

In the complex, there is also a monument to two large Soekarno-Hatta statues standing side by side, similar to the photo documentation when the text of the proclamation was first to read.

In the middle of the two statues of the proclaimer is a statue of the proclamation text made of black marble stone slabs.

The composition and form of writing are similar to the original proclamation text typed by Sayuti Melik and the original signatures of Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta. While Soekarno has a statue height of 4.6 meters while Bung Hatta has a height of 4.3 meters.
