Here’s Traditional Clothes Worn by Jokowi Every State Event
VIVA – President Joko Widodo is one of the presidents who most often wears traditional clothes on every Independence Day, state speeches such as the annual assembly of the MPR, or other state events.
In delivering a state speech and government statement regarding the 2023 APBN Bill and Financial Notes at the MPR Annual Meeting and Joint Meeting with the DPR & DPD RI, Joko Widodo was wearing traditional Bangka Belitung clothes.
Joko Widodo made this a tradition, different with previous presidents who only wore formal clothes. Here are some of the traditional clothes worn by Jokowi at state events.
Klungkung Traditional Clothes, Bali (2019)
While attending the Independence Ceremony of the Republic of Indonesia in 2019, Joko Widodo wore traditional clothes from Klungkung Regency, Bali Province.
Joko Widodo wore clothes dominated by dark colors and brown cloth. He also wears a gold headgear and a dagger tucked into his waist.
Sasak Traditional Clothes, NTB (2019)
President Jokowi once wore the Sasak Traditional Dress during a joint session of the DPR-DPD on August 16, 2019.
This men's traditional clothing is called Pegon. Pegon which is shaped like a suit has acculturation and influences from Javanese traditions and European suits. This mixture is considered a symbol of majesty and modesty.
Sabu Tribe Traditional Clothes, NTT (2020)
During the annual session of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly in August 2020, President Joko Widodo wore the traditional clothes of the Sabu Tribe from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
The clothes he wears consist of a black long-sleeved shirt, a sash cloth that is crossed with a gold flower pattern, and a headband.
Baduy Tribe Traditional Clothes, Banten (2021)
At the annual session of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly in August 2021, President Joko Widodo wore the traditional Urang Kanekes or Bedouin clothing.
The clothes are telekung, kutung clothes, and sling bags. Telekung is a headband, commonly referred to as 'koncer' or 'roma'. This headband is the result of weaving the Baduy community.
Kutung is a white long-sleeved shirt without a collar or known as 'jamang sangsang'. However, Jokowi was worn a navy-blue shirt complete with a brown knitted sling bag and a red and white pin on the left chest.
Paksian Traditional Clothes, Bangka Belitung (2022)
At the annual MPR session in August 2022, President Jokowi wore the traditional Paksian clothing from Bangka Belitung.
President Jokowi wears a green moss-colored Paksian clothes that symbolizes coolness, hope, and growth.
This Paksian shirt consists of a calf-length robe, trousers, a sash and a typical Bangka woven cual cloth. As for the head cover, Sungkon is used, while the clothes also have bamboo shoots patterned ornaments.
Buton Traditional Clothes, Southeast Sulawesi (2022)
During the ceremony to celebrate Indonesia's 77th independence at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, President Jokowi wore traditional Butonese clothing from Southeast Sulawesi. The clothes consist of shirts, trousers, sarongs, and skullcaps dominated by red.
