Based on the history of Timor Leste being colonized by Portugal in the 16th century. Post-Portugal left Timor Leste on November 28, 1975, the largest political party at that time, namely Fretilin, declared the independence of Timor Leste.

However, nine days after the declaration of independence, Indonesia invaded and later occupied Timor Leste, and declared this territory as the 27th province. Timor Leste was part of Indonesia for 24 years.

In 1999, the Indonesian government held a referendum, which gave the people of East Timor a choice between accepting the grant of autonomy within Indonesia or independence.

The results of the referendum which took place on August 30, 1999 showed that the majority of the people of Timor Leste wanted independence.

On May 20, 2002, Timor Leste officially became an independent country that was fully sovereign and recognized by the United Nations.
