VIVA – The Youth 20 (Y20) Summit was officially opened at the Nusantara V Building, House of Representatives (DPR) complex at Jakarta on Monday, July 18, 2022. A total of 72 delegates from 18 countries attended the Y20 Summit physically.
As information, the summit will be held on July 17 to 24, 2022.
Young delegates from various countries will discuss the finalization of the Communique, a youth declaration containing policy recommendations for world leaders of G20 countries. Delegates will provide their opinion about this policy recommendation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, opened the event and said that Y20 needed to advance the two roles of youth as agents of change and peace.
According to Retno Marsudi, in the midst of various global challenges, the transformative capabilities of 1.2 billion youth around the world can make an extraordinary contribution to solutions to various problems that exist in the world.
“As future leaders, youth must play an important role to ensure a prosperous and sustainable peace. In a globalized and interconnected world, this can be done by fostering dialogue, building bridges and not building walls. This bridge must be based on diversity," Retno Marsudi remarked.
As agents of change, youth must be able to overcome challenges and change the world for the better, be able to think out of the box and provide innovative solutions.
Retno added that she welcomes the policy recommendations that will be announced at the end of the Y20 Indonesia Summit later.
Y20 Indonesia 2022 Co-Chair, Michael Victor Sianipar emphasized that the Y20 delegation has a big responsibility, considering that not all youth have the opportunity to join this activity.
However, the Y20 delegates brought the aspirations of youth in their respective countries.
“In harmony with Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, we celebrate our diversity in Indonesia. But we must also celebrate diversity in the world. Within that diversity, there is unity, coherence, and understanding. This is the goal of Y20 Indonesia and the G20 Indonesia Presidency,” Michael remarked.
Meanwhile, Member of Commission XI DPR, Putri Anetta Komarudin on that occasion emphasized the importance of increasing youth representation in the policy-making process.
Furthermore, the Communique is a guide for government and policy-making.
"Strengthening and empowering youth in terms of the political process and policy making is one of the important things for us to include in the Communique, both in terms of global, regional, or national policies," Putri Anetta said.
