VIVA – Indonesian President Joko Widodo finally met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Mariinsky Palace, Kiev on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 to discuss Jokowi's peace mission. Jokowi offered to deliver a message from Ukrainian President Zelensky to Russian President Vladimir Putin to try the hopes for peace.

"In this regard, I offer to bring a message from President Zelensky to President Putin, which I will visit soon," Jokowi said when delivering a joint press statement with President Zelensky after the meeting, according to information from the Press Bureau of the Presidential Secretariat.

During the meeting, President Jokowi emphasized Indonesia's position regarding the importance of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

President Jokowi also conveyed the importance of a peaceful settlement and said that the spirit of peace should never fade. Jokowi's visit to Ukraine is a manifestation of the Indonesian people's concern for Ukraine.

"I conveyed to President Zelensky that I made this visit as a manifestation of Indonesia's concern for the situation in Ukraine," Jokowi said.

Jokowi is the first Asian president to visit Ukraine and Russia. Jokowi said that with existing capabilities, the people and government of Indonesia are trying to contribute assistance including medicines and commitments to reconstruct hospitals around Kyiv.

Jokowi gave a direct invitation to participate in the G20 Summit to be held in November 2022 in Bali to Ukrainian President Zelensky.

In line with that, Jokowi also said Indonesia's commitment to continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Ukraine.

“This year is 30 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Ukraine. I convey Indonesia's commitment to continue to strengthen better cooperation," President Joko Widodo said.

Meanwhile, President Zelensky expressed his appreciation for President Joko Widodo's presence in Ukraine. According to him, this is the first visit by a leader of an Asian country to Ukraine since the invasion of Ukraine.

"Thank you for the presence of President Jokowi, which is the first visit by an Asian leader since the invasion of Ukraine. I also invite Indonesian businesses to participate in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine," President Zelensky said.
