Thailand Lifts Pre-Registration Rules for Foreign Tourists

VIVA – Thailand will stop the pre-registration process on Friday, June 17, 2022. This pre-registration is for tourist. Thailand also no longer requires the use of masks in public places. The steps were taken as the spread of COVID-19 slowed.
According to Thailand's Minister of Tourism, Pipat Ratchakitprakan, the "Thailand Pass" system will be discontinued from July 1, 2022. He said this during the lifting of one of the latest restrictions imposed on the tourism sector.
Below the system, residents must first obtain permission from the Thailand authorities if they want to travel to the country. Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for tourism in the world.
Previously, tourism businesses had complained and criticized the requirements imposed on foreigners, namely having to submit a lot of documents, from vaccine certificates and swab tests to medical insurance and hotel reservations.
According to business circles, such requirements threaten the recovery of the tourism sector.
In 2019, Thailand was visited by 40 million people. Unfortunately, the number of visits last year did not reach one percent of that number even though the government had relaxed the requirements.
While tourism has returned to demand in recent months, the industry is still far from recovering. Many people have lost their jobs and businesses have lost in tourism, a sector that typically accounts for about 12 percent of Thailand's gross domestic product.
On Friday, June 17, the corona virus task force in Thailand said that the use of masks from July would be voluntary. However, authorities advise people to keep wearing masks if they are in a crowd or sick.
So far, Thailand has recorded that more than 30,000 people have died because of corona virus. Thailand has been quite successful in dealing with the outbreak because the vaccination rate of more than 80 percent.
