The Reason Why No Bridge Between the Continent Europe and Africa
- U-Report
VIVA – A bridge is a structure made to unite two sides such as crossing a river, ravine, or highway. Not only that, bridges also play an important role in land transportation infrastructure as the flow of travel between cities or even between continents.
Examples of world-famous bridges include the Bosphorus Bridge, a bridge in Turkey and serves to connect the continents of Asia and Europe. In Indonesia, there is the Suramadu Bridge, a bridge that connects the island of Java with the island of Madura.
The two bridges are famous for their role as intercontinental and inter-island/city links. Between the continents of Europe and Africa did not want to be left behind.
There have been plans to build a bridge over the Strait of Gibraltar, the strait that separates the continents of Europe and Africa. However, so far, this plan has not materialized.
Here are the reasons for the nothingness of a bridge between the continents of Europe and Africa:
1. Too Difficult for Realizing It
Efforts to build bridges between the continents of Europe and Africa have even existed since the late 1920s. This project was developed by a German architect named Herman Sorgel.
He plans to build a hydroelectric dam or PLTAÂ which is expected to close the Strait of Gibraltar.
But unfortunately, all of that was still just a plan until Sorgel died in 1952, this project did not become a reality because it was very difficult to 'close' the Strait of Gibraltar which is located in the Atlantic Ocean.
2. Lack of Supply Funds
The depth of the Strait of Gibraltar even reaches 900-meters. Fortunately building a sturdy construction that goes beyond that depth, of course requires a lot of money. In addition, the experts have also never built such a deep construction.
3. Multidirectional Strong Current
The strong current in the Strait of Gibraltar is also a factor that makes it difficult to build bridges between the continents of Europe and Africa.
As already mentioned, the location of the Strait of Gibraltar is in the sea off the Atlantic Ocean. High sea conditions with very strong currents in various directions make it increasingly difficult to build a stable construction.
4. There are Other Projects
Most likely a bridge between the European and African continents is impossible to build, experts do not just give up.
They plan to build an underwater tunnel. But again, it difficult because the bottom of the Strait of Gibraltar is made of rock which is very hard that makes it difficult to excavate.
