Indonesia Proposes Tenun as Cultural Heritage

VIVAnews - Indonesia is proposing tenun (woven cloth) as the Indonesian cultural heritage to UNESCO this year through Cita Tenun Indonesia association.
Head of Cita Tenun Indonesia, Sari Hartanto Wibowo, said it is important that the international community acknowledges the Indonesian woven cloth as an anticipation over the 'batik incident', of which a country claims batik as its heritage.
"Hopefully, it will work in the future," said Sari today, August 27, during a tenun festival.
The festival is held as a the second anniversary of Cita Tenun Indonesia, which showcases a plentiful types of tenun displayed on 50 stands. The festival was inaugurated by Indonesian First Lady, Ani Yudhoyono.
According to Ani, the Indonesian tenun has meet every condition to be internationally-acclaimed. "Tenun has been produced and worn by the nation for generations," said Ani.
Among the various tenun being exhibited are tenun ikat of Palembang, endeg of Bali, donggala of Southeast Sulawesi, ulos of Batak, tapis of Lampung, lurik of Yogyakarta, and tais of East Nusa Tenggara.
