Pope Francis: Indonesia's Diversity Can Be a Role Model for the World

Jakarta, VIVA – Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, stated that Indonesia could serve as an example to the world as a country capable of creating a peaceful life amidst diversity.

He acknowledged Indonesia's remarkable diversity, with the nation being home to 714 ethnic groups and more than 17,000 islands.

Pope made this statement during a bilateral meeting with President Jokowi at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (Sept 9).

"Pope Francis stated that Indonesia has an extraordinary level of diversity and can serve as a model for the world where this diversity can thrive and create a peaceful life," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta.

Pope Francis expressed his admiration for how Indonesia celebrates differences.

According to him, this plays a crucial role in educating children to appreciate diversity.

"This is the function of education. Schools are very important because from a young age, children must be taught to appreciate differences. If they, and we all, learn to value diversity, peace will be maintained," Minister Marsudi remarked.

The minister added that Pope Francis also asked President Joko Widodo to convey his greetings to the youth of Indonesia.

Pope Francis expressed his admiration for Indonesia's youth with all their diversity, including the children who welcomed him at the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta.

Pope Francis also expressed his gratitude for Indonesia's hospitality.

"Pope Francis conveyed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the entire Indonesian people in welcoming his visit to Indonesia," she concluded.
