Jakarta – Head of the Indonesian Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas), Inspector General of Police Aan Suhanan, revealed that the national accident rate is very high and has resulted in casualties of more than 27,000.
"I convey that the accident rate is quite high nationally, with over 152,000 accidents then resulting in over 27,000 fatalities due to accidents," Suhanan informed in a statement on Saturday.
Therefore, the police were conducting a traffic safety operation throughout Indonesia. The operation will be conducted simultaneously from March 4 to 17, 2024, across Indonesia.
"Thus, to support accident prevention measures, a road safety campaign is being held," Suhanan added.
Suhanan stated that this road safety campaign is a shared responsibility, not only of the police or relevant ministries and agencies but also to realize the security, safety, order, and smoothness of traffic.
Suhanan remarked several violations that are the targets of this year's safety operation. These include overspeeding, helmet use, seatbelt use, and protection of children.
"Furthermore, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using a mobile phone while driving, driving against traffic, and overload over dimension are also targets alongside other violations," Suhanan concluded.
