Indonesia and Timor Leste Encourage Completion of Border Negotiations

Bogor – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received the visit of Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java on Friday. 

Both leaders agreed to encourage the completion of border negotiations between Indonesia and Timor Leste. 

“We agreed to encourage the completion of border negotiations between the two countries. I also welcome the reactivation of the Joint Boundary Committee for border management, including the reactivation of cross-border posts," President Jokowi said in a statement on Friday. 

Moreover, PM Xanana Gusmao also welcomed the performance of the agreement negotiation team between Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

He also believed that the two countries could find a solution to the border problems between the two countries in the future.

"As stated by President Jokowi, the importance of resolving maritime boundaries with Indonesia will strengthen the sovereignty of our two countries," PM Gusmao remarked. 

Apart from border issues, both leaders also agreed to increase economic cooperation. 

President Jokowi welcomed the Timor-Leste government's commitment to creating a better investment climate through an investment protection agreement.

"I also appreciate Timor-Leste's trust in Indonesian SOEs in various projects, such as the construction of roads in Oecusse and the expansion of Dili International Airport," the President stated.

"And by signing the MoU on information technology cooperation, we are also encouraging cooperation on telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic investment plans,"

Meanwhile, in the context of regional cooperation, Indonesia is committed to continuing to support Timor-Leste's full membership in ASEAN.

Both leaders also discussed the issue of Myanmar and agreed to support Laos' chairmanship of ASEAN this year.

"Both countries agreed to support Laos' chairmanship of ASEAN this year in encouraging the implementation of 5PC (5 Points of Consensus)," he concluded.
