Mount Dukono in North Maluku Erupts, Spewing Volcanic Ash 4000 Meters

Maluku – The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reports that there has been an eruption of Mount Dukono in North Maluku which spewed volcanic ash as high as approximately 4,000 meters. 

"The eruption occurred at 06:52 a.m. local time," said Dukono Volcano Observation Post Officer Sarjan Roboke in a statement on Wednesday. 

Roboke said the ash column was observed to be white to gray with a thick intensity leaning towards the southwest. When the report was made the eruption was still ongoing.

He suggested people around Mount Dukono not to do activities, not to climb, and not to approach Malupang Warirang Crater within a three-kilometer radius.  

In addition, the community is also advised to always provide a mask to cover the nose and mouth to avoid the threat of volcanic ash hazards to the respiratory system. 

The community or sand miners are asked not to carry out activities along the Muye River in Mamuya Village, Ruko River in Ruko Village, and Mede River in Mede Village during rainfall at the top of Mount Dukono to avoid the threat of rain lava flooding.  

Mount Dukono is a volcano located in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province with an altitude of 1,087 meters above sea level. 

PVMBG monitors the activity of Mount Dukono visually and instrumentally from the observation post located in Mamuya Village, Galela District, North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province.
