Jokowi Offers Five Renewable Energy Projects to Japanese PM Kishida

Japan – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) offered some renewable projects during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the ASEAN-Japan Summit in Tokyo. 

According to the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Arifin Tasrif stated that Japan's contribution has played a significant role in accelerating three priority projects. 

Such as the development of a Geothermal Plant in Muara Laboh, Aceh with the potential for additional capacity of up to 140 MW in units 2 and 3, as well as an 18 MW Waste Power Plant in Legok Nangka, West Java.

"As co-initiator of the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC), President Jokowi emphasized the importance of cooperation in decarbonizing the supply and demand sectors, including in the industrial sector, inclusive funding, and the transfer of low-carbon technology," said Minister Tasrif in a statement on Monday. 

The minister further emphasized that AZEC must focus on concrete areas of cooperation that can be implemented immediately, namely the development of electric power transmission and smart grids to support renewable energy and increase energy efficiency in all sectors. 

"Including buildings and industry, by Government Regulation Number 33 2023 concerning energy conservation," Minister Tasrif remarked. 

Minister Tasrif stated that energy management activities in industry in 2022 will be able to save energy equivalent to 20.4 TWh, reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 11.7 million tons of CO2, and save fuel costs of IDR 13.4 trillion.

In addition, the AZEC forum is also expected to be able to discuss certainty about the follow-up to the 12 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the AZEC Public-Private Investment Forum, on March 3 2023 in Tokyo, including:

1. MoU between Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) and IHI Corporation regarding the green ammonia production and co-firing program.

2. MoU between Pertamina Gas Negara, JGC HD, Osaka Gas, INPEX, and Perkebunan Nusantara regarding the feedstock supply program for decarbonizing Indonesia's gas grid.

3. MoU between ITOCHU Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc., INPEX Corporation, Medco Power Indonesia, and Ormat Geothermal Indonesia regarding the expansion of the Sarulla Geothermal Project.

4. MoU between Pupuk Indonesia Holding Corporation and TOYO Engineering Corporation regarding the construction of a green ammonia factory in Indonesia.

5. MoU between Pertamina Power, New and Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Incorporated (TEPCO HD) regarding the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia.
