NYON – Erling Haaland and Pep Guardiola have been honored by UEFA. They were voted Europe's best player and coach for the 2022/2023 season.
Haaland was voted the best player defeating Argentina's national team captain and former Paris Saint Germain (PSG) player, Lionel Messi. Apart from Messi, he also beat one of the other strongest candidates, namely his teammate at Manchester City, Kevin de Bruyne.
Previously Haaland also won the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) Player of the Year individual title for the 2022/2023 season awarded by the British Professional Players Association (PFA).
Now, Haaland is one of the strong candidates to become the world's best player by embracing the Ballon D'or individual title after delivering The Citizens to the treble winner in the 2022-2023 season.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola in the vote successfully outperformed two other coaches, namely Luciano Spalletti (Napoli) and Simone Inzaghi (Inter Milan).
The man from Spain last season led Manchester City to win the treble for the first time by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Pep Guardiola won the treble for the second time in his career as a coach after leading Barcelona to the treble in the 2009/2010 season.
This season, the Citizens have impressed under Guardiola's tactical direction, scoring 151 goals in all competitions at an average of 2.5 goals per game.
Guardiola set a record as the first coach to win the UEFA Super Cup with three different clubs.
