Turkiye Urges Indonesia Against FETO Terrorist Organization
- ANTARA/Cindy Frishanti.
Jakarta – The government of Turkiye has asked Indonesian authorities must be aware and against the activities of the Fethullah Güllen Terrorist Organization (FETO). Also, take precautions against their activities.
"Some members of the organization are still actively carrying out pro-FETO efforts in Indonesia such as running restaurants and engaging in cultural and academic activities as well as organizing conferences and events," the Turkish Embassy in Jakarta said through a press statement here on Sunday.
The Turkiye's embassy said that Their goal is to become influential in Indonesian society, and they are trying to gain power by drawing support from various political and academic groups. They are doing this by exploiting the notion of tolerance, multiculturalism, and democracy.
FETO is trying to build closer ties with the Indonesian academic community by inviting prominent academics to their events, it stated.
Any personal or academic contact with individuals within FETO is against the spirit of friendly and brotherly relations between Indonesia and Turkiye, it added.
"Therefore, we ask Indonesia to continue to be aware of FETO's activities as they are a threat not only to Turkiye but also to the brotherhood of the Indonesian nation."
FETO is a sui generis organization similar to a religious sect that has anointed a cleric named Fethullah Güllen as its supreme leader. On July 15, 2016, the group attempted a coup by bombing Turkish government buildings.
The President of Turkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan designated July 15 as Democracy and National Unity Day in memory of those who died in the event, as well as the Turkish people and security forces who thwarted the coup attempt.
