VIVA – Archaeologists have recently been shocked by the discovery of 25 skulls at the ancient burial site of El Cementerio near the village of Onavas, Mexico. But weird, 13 of these skulls just looks like an alien.

The burial site was initially discovered by the villagers in 1999 while creating an irrigation system. It's considered the first pre-Hispanic resting place found in the state of Sonora, Mexico, and has been in existence for approximately 1,000 years.

It's at this burial site that the 25 skulls were found, with 17 of them belonging to children aged between five months and 16 years. Only one of the skulls was identified as female. The children's skulls showed no signs of disease or trauma as the cause of death.

Thirteen of the skulls displayed a highly peculiar appearance, elongated and resembling alien heads.

According to experts, these skull shapes were the result of a ritual known as cranial deformation, in which the skulls were compressed between two wooden boards from childhood.

This practice was common among pre-Hispanic populations in Mesoamerica and western Mexico. However, it is the first time that elongated skulls have been found in northern Mexico.

Cranial deformation has been practiced since the Neolithic period, approximately 10,000 years ago. This practice still exists in various cultures around the world.

Some tribes believe that this process makes children more intelligent. Another reason for cranial deformation is to elevate social status or to make individuals appear brave and formidable in warfare.
