Anak Krakatau Erupts Three Times, Spews Ash 3,500 Meters High

VIVA – Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia was reported to have erupted three times on Saturday. The eruption has spewed ash between 1,500 meters to 3,500 meters into the sky. 

The highest eruption occurred at 5:50 pm reaching 3,500 meters. In a report made by the Pasauran Anak Krakatau Volcano Monitoring Post officer, Ade Yasser Akhmad Purwata recorded that the ash column was observed to be gray with a thick intensity towards the northwest. 

The report has been uploaded to Magma Indonesia, the official application of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

The eruption condition was also recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 70 mm for 2 minutes and 37 seconds. The nearest settlement is on Sebesi Island, which is 16.5 km away.

As for the report compiled by Jumono, an officer at the Pasauran Anak Krakatau Volcano Monitoring Post, this eruption spewed volcanic ash up to 1,500 meters and headed northwest, at 2.31 pm. The maximum amplitude was 70 mm for 2 minutes 49 seconds. 

In another report, the eruption occurred at 4:23 am. The eruption triggered a height of gray ash reaching 2,000 meters to the northwest. The eruption reached 60 mm for 4 minutes. However, no explosion was heard. 

Moreover, the public was suggest to not carrying out activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the body of Mount Anak Krakatau. Currently, the status of the mountain is still Alert or at Level III.
